Your Phone Can Now Connect to Android XR Glasses

Posted

Google and Samsung still haven’t given us an official launch date for their first Android XR glasses, but all of the signs are pointing towards an imminent launch. The newest clue comes as a Google Play Services update that is getting Android phones ready for the big moment.

We’ve seen the FCC listings for all of Samsung’s first Android XR glasses, which were made in partnership with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. We have also seen several colors of each frame and a report that November should be the launch month.

Now, we have Google Play Services v26.42 rolling out as of October 26. This update brings the following:

  • [Phone] You can now connect Android XR glasses to your phone.

And that’s it – that is the story here. Google is preparing Android phones for the launch of Android XR glasses and they are doing so by giving phones the ability to connect to them. Without this update, well, launching Samsung’s glasses would be sort of difficult. Imagine getting your new and very expensive smart glasses and your phone is like, “Hey, buddy, I can’t connect to that, enjoy this error message.”

I’m still not sure what the vibes are around these glasses. They feel far too late to the party, but I guess we’re also curious if they’ll be any good. We do like the fact that they have no connection to Meta, which has its own glasses that are going through quite the cultural moment in all of the wrong ways.
